CEBU CITY (8th Update, 6:50 p.m.) -- Dozens of people remain trapped under houses that collapsed after a series of earthquakes hit the Visayas Monday, leaving rescuers digging with picks and shovels to reach the victims.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) placed the death toll to 7, while other reports said 13 people have died after the 6.9-magnitude quake that struck Negros and Cebu provinces at 11:49 a.m. Monday.

CEBU CITY (7th Update, 4 p.m.) -- At least seven people died in the strong earthquake in Negros that destroyed buildings and triggered landslides that buried dozens of houses, trapping residents. At least 29 people were declared missing.
Benito Ramos, executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), said in a television interview that they already recorded seven fatalities from the quake – two from Tayasan town, four in Guilhungan, and one in Jimalalud in Negros Oriental.
