Cebu Zoo

Located on Beverly Hills in Cebu City, Philippines. Many locals have wondered on why the place is hard to find. That is so true since even the map on the internet does not have a name or label on the street leading to the gates of the one and only zoo in the queen city of the south.

The Cebu City Zoo is currently under the management of Mr. Giovanni Stephen Romarate. Dr. Alice T. Utlang serves as the zoo veterinarian. As of today, the zoo is home to a number of species. Among other residents, it has a 70-year-old parrot, some guinea fowls, pheasants, roosters, owls, sheep and goats, monkeys, a cat from Malaysia, and several reptiles, including an old crocodile that seems to have grown too big for its pen. It also features a golden leopard donated by Former Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña. But its resident superstar is the Bengal tiger named Boggart.

Magellan’s Cross

The present Magellan’s Cross is now a Tindalo Wood encasing the original cross planted in April 21, 1521 by Ferdinand Magellan, this marks the spot where the first Christian Filipinos, Rajah Humabon and Queen Juana and about 400 followers were baptized by Fr. Pedro Valderama.

This cross is housed in a chapel next to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño on Magallanes Street (Magallanes being the Spanish name of Magellan), just in front of the city center of Cebu City. A sign below the cross describes the original cross is encased inside the wooden cross that is found in the center of the chapel. This is to protect the original cross from people who chipped away parts of the cross for souvenir purposes or in the belief that the cross possesses miraculous powers.

Taoist Temple

Situated in Beverly Hills Subdivision in Cebu City, the Taoist temple was built in 1972
and is the center of Taoism religion worship following th teachings of ancient Chinese philosopher,
Lao Tze.

Taoist Temple is considered as one of the many tourist destinations in Cebu. The Taoist Temple
is open to both worshipers and non-worshipers, however, current policies are giving more
priority to worshipers and imposing time limits to visiting tourists within the premises.

The temple is the center of worship for Taoism, the religion which follows the teachings of the ancient Chinese philosopher, Lao Zi. Another ritual among Taoist devotees, which is done during Wednesdays and Sundays, is the climbing of its 81 steps (representing the 81 chapters of Taoism scriptures) to light joss sticks and have their fortune read by the monks.
